The Case For Political Education

It is both poignant and depressing to see that photograph and consider how the opportunity for a genuine popular education has been lost. The whole idea of political education is now eclipsed by the mantra of skills and employer engagement. Note too that it is employer not employee engagement.

The Plump : This thread links to a new blog run by the Dronfield Labour Party Discussion Group. I am their Political Education Officer. After one meeting, five of us were sat in the lounge bar and discovered we had attended Coleg Harlech, the Northern College, the Co-op College, Newbattle Abbey and Ruskin College. Those we draw from for our meetings include 4 tutors who taught on the courses mentioned on the photo, two former students, and a tutor organiser on courses some of us also worked on at Doncaster. The Chair of the meetings was also an adult student on an Access Course I ran. She went on to obtain a Politics Degree at Sheffield University. Attendances average a dozen and as the meetings only last for 75 minutes, I normally only draw from speakers in the vicinity. But if you ever have other commitments in the Sheffield or North Derbyshire area, let me know and then (if you would like to) we might be able to arrange for you to lead in on the issue of Adult Education. It is a topic which keeps surfacing in different forms.

I would be happy to do so Harry. I have family in the area so it would give me a chance to visit and an excuse to escape :-)

Keep in touch.
