The Twin Pillars of the Derbyshire Miners
I took these two photographs today outside of the former offices of the Derbyshire Miners' Association (DMA). The statues are of the two key figures who established the DMA from around about 1880. The top photo shows James Haslam who was the first Secretary of the Derbyshire Miners. He became the MP for Chesterfield from 1906 until his death in 1913. The other photo shows William Edwin Harvey who held several leading positions in the DMA, becoming their Secretary after the death of James Haslam. He became the MP for North East Derbyshire in 1907, until his death in 1914. The statues were jointly unveiled at a common ceremony in front of a huge crowd of miners and their families in 1915.
