Snorkels For The Unemployed

During the inter-war depression the Plebs League produced this cartoon. The Con-Dem Coalition is now employing the same tactic, although inflation has boosted the figures that are shown. There is, however, an innovation which Duncan Smith is now considering. He may issue snorkels to those on the bottom rung, so they can swim around looking for jobs. No wonder the Lib Dems joined up to this Compassionate Conservatism.

I hold another good cartoon from 1895, but the copyright was claimed for its republication a few years ago. Once I have permission to run it, I will do so.

Excellent cartoon and extremely relevant to the current Conservative rhetoric of "tough but fair" and "sharing the pain of cuts equally" while transparently taking benefits from the poorest while cutting corporation tax for big multinational firms.
