Many Labour MPs (and, in my experience, Labour grassroots members) never have been. It is not only the "New Labour" governments of recent times that have proved startlingly illiberal on issues of personal freedom and justice. Within living memory there were Labour MPs who voted in favour of hanging. More recently, having people in the forefront of the parliamentary party such as Reid, Blunkett and Straw, and of course Blair himself, not to mention such people as Frank Field ("28 days?
