My parents were from Chesterfield and moved up to the N/E when I was a baby in the mid-fifties, for my father to take up a job in coal preparation. As a small boy I was brought up in Whickham, then a much more mixed area for Newcastle/Sunderland supporters than it is now.In our street there were a number of red and whites and they determined my destiny. I became an ardent fan and have travelled the land over the years to watch the lads. Wembley '73 reinforced the faith in me as I saw every home game, Man City away and then the semi and final. Lowest point? Division 2/3 playoff at home to Gillingham. Harry talks about watching Chesterfield - I've been to loads of games at Saltergate, visiting family on regular occasions. The Spireites remain my second team. So very interesting to hear of Harry's journey, in many ways the opposite of my own.
Keep the faith!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01869090584636003320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31588679.post-73530349544186002772007-06-20T23:38:00.000+01:002007-06-20T23:38:00.000+01:00Harry,thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a co...Harry,

thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment, your post here is very evocative and brings backso many memories of my father introducing me to the delights of Roker Park, although it was in 1963. I have great memories of sitting in the Clock Stand with a row of uncles and cousins, it was a family occasion.
I graduated to the Roker End in the late 1960's and the Fulwell End a little later. I too was at The SOL for the opening game against Ajax and the first home league game against Man. City, there is no better place to be for a big match with a full house, the passion and fervour remain after over fourty years - mind there have been a few tears along the way.

My biggest regret was failing to get tickets for 1973 Cup Final, having been to all the games along the run in, but I did get to see the cup and be photographed next to Jim Montgomery when they brought it to the RAFA club in South Shields during that summer.

Thanks for the memories Harry, and keep pitying me for the politics, I think I'm the only one around here!

Curly's Corner Shop, the blog!Curlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15795795668889685782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31588679.post-1167781114334836752007-01-02T23:38:00.000+00:002007-01-02T23:38:00.000+00:00Hi HarryI liked your post alot. The really filled Selhurst Park with their singing!

I'd love to go to the Stadium of Light and see them at home one day.krishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01984620763250118501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31588679.post-1164713098658614962006-11-28T11:24:00.000+00:002006-11-28T11:24:00.000+00:00nightowl and el tom,You have now set me off trying...nightowl and el tom,

You have now set me off trying to discover when my last visit to Roker Park was, and my first to the SoL. My children will know as I think I was with my daughter at Roker and my son at the SoL. At my age it is easier to remember events either 60 years ago or
yesterday.
Nowadays I watch the oldest team in the world play non-league, just 15 minutes walk from my home (they are Sheffield FC, the former amateur team). The odd Sunderland game I get to is often away. My son will be at the QPR match tonight.
I know that Tom (el tom) is a mackem as it says he has an interest in Sunderland AFC on his blog. So I do follow both of your
blogs.Harry Barneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01833380054575757928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31588679.post-1164669045023487632006-11-27T23:10:00.000+00:002006-11-27T23:10:00.000+00:00That's one of the most beautiful things I've read ...That's one of the most beautiful things I've read in a long time.

How did you know I was a mackem?

I remember my first match. Blackburn Rovers, 1991. My Grandad, the person that got me into sunderland, ended up getting me a season ticket. He made me a seat with some ropes out of a piece of wood (I was 5 at the time). I would hang it off the railings in the stand opposite the clock stand, though I moved to the Fullwell once I was tall enough.

I was there for the last game at roker, and the second at the Stadium of Light (Man City, 3-1). All in all, I had a season ticket of some sort for ten years straight, but I gave it up for sould destroying service sector employment, and moved with my parents down south about 5 years ago.

My family on my Mum's side was a mining one. My great grandad used to work down a pit in county Durham. Skunk though, I'm afraid.

The only reason we support sunderland in my family is my Grandfather's teenage rebellion.

Funnily enough, it was my Grandfather who was the first person I knew who was a member of the Labour Party.

I miss my seat at the SoL. I was in the North stand, halfway above the goal.Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07801341846218646357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31588679.post-1164650304160057322006-11-27T17:58:00.000+00:002006-11-27T17:58:00.000+00:00Fantastic post, really captured the emotion and pa...Fantastic post, really captured the emotion and passion of being a Sunderland supporter. My first match was in 1997 when I was eight, the opening match of the Stadium of Light v Ajax, drew 0-0, then I went to see Swindon, we drew 0-0, finally I saw some goals in the best match I've ever seen, Sunderland 4 - 2 Sheffield United. Let's hope we get some glory soon!Andrew.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09397101025581286138noreply@blogger.com
